MUCO — Location based social VR experience

Phenomenal Viborg, a cultural XR innovation lab based in Denmark, is building MUCO — an open-source platform for multi-user co-located VR.
MUCO enables up to 20 people to share a virtual space while walking, interacting, and exploring — all in real time and with full-body presence.
To achieve this, the team relies on Antilatency tracking — a flexible and scalable solution that allows accurate, low-latency positional tracking across a 250 m² physical area. The system allows users to move naturally through large spaces with no teleportation, no drift, and no need for controllers.
"
Phenomenal is building MUCO - an Open Source platform for accessible, precise and scalable Co-Location XR Location-based experiences(LBE). Using Antilatency tracking and our bespoke server architecture, we have enabled 20 people in a shared physical space to explore virtual worlds together, with a level of precision that allows players to interact with confidence.

About the experience

Virtual Museum
Phenomenal’s flagship experience, the Virtual Museum, is a permanent, walkable VR installation where families and friend groups explore digital art and interactive storytelling. The “magical corridor” navigation system makes the experience seamless, allowing visitors to move from one VR room to another intuitively — like walking through real-world galleries.

Beyond culture: education, science, and more
The team is also using MUCO for educational and scientific experiences, such as Cosmotorium — a real-time simulation of the solar system where users walk among the planets at true scale.

MUCO's modular architecture make the system ideal for applications in:
  • Healthcare & therapy
  • Architectural visualization
  • Professional and safety training
  • Inclusive, accessible XR environments
